On-board Payload Data Processing Systems

چکیده
At the turn of this century, satellites which have demonstrated the feasibility of many space applications, enter in a new era. Today they have an additional mandate: they must provide a well-identified service to Users and/or to Customers. This is applicable not only to Telecommunication but also to Earth observation missions. Data products or derived information must be elaborated rapidly in order to either authorise a near real time direct dissemination of data to Users or to generate alarms (e.g. for forest fire detection). Furthermore, the amount of data produced by instruments exceeds the downlink capability, leading to the need of implementing a selection or a compression mechanism onboard. On the same line, for observatory type of science missions, on board autonomy can bring significant advantages. With respect to the points outlined here above, on-board Payload Data Processing Systems can provide a suitable solution and the necessary autonomy or intelligence. This paper focuses on Payload Data Processing Systems and in particular on their implementation based on On-board networks. Taking into account that space applications have specific requirements, no commercially available networking infrastructure could be directly used for on-board applications. Therefore, SpaceWire links, Networks and tools have been standardised and adapted to space use. This paper presents their characteristics, related devices and tools developments and new opportunities offered by their intrinsic flexibility.

Smart Payload Development for High Data Rate Instrument Systems
Instruments proposed to satisfy measurement objectives of future NASA AOs, and the NRC Decadal Survey missions, will need on-board processing technologies to support autonomy, operations, and science data processing. Traditionally, payload design flows down from measurement objectives, to algorithm design, to realization on a computational platform with limited capabilities. We will describe a ...
متن کاملOngoing Developments of Future Payload Data Processing Platforms at ESA
Data compression is a key technology for many types of space missions. Compression algorithms can be implemented in hardware, software, or a combination of both. For software or combined hardware-software implementation the availability of powerful on-board processors is a key requirement. In the recent past, the data volumes produced by all types of space missions have increased significantly,...

On-board data systems and data handling electronics are in constant evolution, due to the obsolescence of components and indeed to the need of increasing their performances. They follow ground technology trends, often at a slower pace, such as the ones allowing easier and faster integration by reusing building blocks. This is well reflected by on-board platform and payload computers that become...

Recent small-satellite developments have been characterised by an increased demand for on-board computational capability. The reasons are manifold and span from the need for autonomy to complete processing of acquired payload data. However, in many cases the needs for all these tasks arise within the same mission and have different, possibly conflicting, requirements in terms of processing reso...
متن کاملGPUs versus FPGAs for Onboard Payload Compression of Remotely Sensed Hyperspectral Data
In this paper, we compare field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) versus graphical processing units (GPUs) in the framework of (lossy) remotely sensed hyperspectral data compression by developing parallel implementations of a spectral unmixing-based compression strategy on both platforms. For the FPGA implementations, we resort to Xilinx hardware devices certified for on-board operation, while f...
